ExeCalibre has a new set of peers
...
Well the weekend started slowly with Chrissie discovering
a giant stripy slug in her pants and Claire and Sally taking
2 hours to put up their tent. But we were able to all go out
for a fab pub meal at the Bull Inn. But the sun was out and
the river was open so a good day of racing was to be had.
Our crew of 18 were able to launch the boat down the steep
steps and around the rocks even after breaking the trolley
dolly! We then had to trek to our race camp which when timed
was a 5 min walk to the boat and 7 minutes to the loos.
We were first race with Amathus and Worcester Dragonflies,
with the expected result of second, however this seeded us
well for our second 200m race. This race was against xx, we
had a great start but as XX started to come up on our right
and were gaining on us there was panic in the boat. We won,
but only just, this was the wake up that Exe-Calibre needed
to realised that panic is not the way in the boat.
Our second 500m was against Bristol and Henley. These are
two teams that we have beaten this year, but could we do it
again? After some faffing on the line for speed boats and
fast flow on the river we were off, our start was amazing
(nearly knocking Sparky off the back) and our middle was superb.
No team was going to give an inch and hearing Rita yelling
for us to reach was enough to keep our big strokes. There
was less than half a second it between first and third thus
we were only half a second off the Cup Major Final. Henley
said later that their race plan was to keep with Bristol as
they expected to leave us at the line…
Our last race of the day was the Cup Tail, once again we
had Henley and BA. We shot off the line with a rate that pushed
all of us, but with Sparky calling and Rita yelling we once
again had a race that could have been anyone’s. There
is nothing quite like a race where you don’t know who
won till the last stroke and yet again we had to see the times
to know what had happened. ExeCalibre 1.36.94, Henley 1.36.19,
BA something between the two, we did not win but we all had
a very exciting and enjoyable day winning 14 league points
for the 200m and 15 for the 500m.
